HOMEWORK # 11

FINALLY, the end of blogs has arrived! This assignment is due on TUESDAY NOVEMBER 23 as either a NEW COMMENT or printed and brought to class...in other words, if you don't get the blog assignments done, you are STILL responsible for completing the assignment and bringing it to class to turn in along with your finished artwork. THE BEST CHOICE is to kill two birds with one stone - do the blog over the weekend and then you don't have to worry about bringing it with you! Two grades in one!!!!

ASSIGNMENT:
Post a comment below in which you describe how you utilized the Creative Process in developing and making your "Family Values" artwork. Think back to the grading criteria for a Formal Critique...if you you give me short, poorly developed answers you won't get a high grade so spend the time really thinking about how you used each step AND don't be afraid to pat yourself on the back and point out the few flaws you may have had in your finished product :-) See my teacher's example below if you need help.

11 comments:

  1. 1. I was inspired by one of the artworks we saw in class - the one with the mom holding the baby with tattoos all over it. I was inspired by the "rock and roll" style of the photograph and the message. I feel like children are taught to be consumers from a very early age and it takes their attention away from the things that matter - that quality time with family means so much more and is more valuable that "stuff." I decided to do a digitally manipulated photograph as well that makes a statement about consumerism and how it is bad for children to learn.
    2. Research - I mostly did research on technique. I wanted to photograph the images myself but needed help on getting the right lighting and then how to alter the photograph to get the really dark background. I also searched for different image manipulation programs because I don't have one on my computer. i found several that were free but had to go through about I found one that was easy to use and looked good. I also read reviews for these programs before I downloaded them and tried them out. Before I started I also asked family and friends what they thought of the topic and some of their personal stories helped me come up with the final design.
    3. I got a lot of ideas from my friends and family for this project and ended up making 3 different design and choosing the best one to turn in for grading. Making all three would be considered "practice" but I also spent about 5 hours just learning the computer program! I also had to set up the shot in several different arrangements because there were important elements that were getting cut out of the picture so I had to get at different angles to really capture photo. Many people think Photography is a quick and easy type of art to create, but I spent just as much time "practicing" with this artwork as someone who did a drawing or painting!
    4. The final result is actually pretty good! My only regret is that I didn't have a better program to use. I also regret that I got so many of the logos off the internet because some turned out really pixelated which looks bad compared to the crisp, high resolution photograph I took with my digital camera. Next time I would probably take the time to draw out the logos and then scan them into the computer. This would also give it more of a "tattoo" look and feel. So other than the resolution, I am happy with how the final product looks.
    5. The most successful aspect of my design is the message. I think the message is very clear and is done in an "in your face" manner so it grabs your attention. I really enjoyed working in this format so I think I might work in this style again and do more research to make my photography skills a little bit better!

  2. 1. I was inspired by some of the artworks I saw in class, but mostly by my own life and with the help of other friends go get different perspectives. I believe family morals are what shape children into what they are in the future. With the lack of family morals, childen are more likely to act out. For those who are lucky they chose to change there life and be better, but for the most part children grow up and get into trouble and mess up their lives. That was my case atleast. I have decided to do a compare and contrast collage to show what life can be like with or without family morals.
2.I did most of my research talking to different people and getting their perspectives. I talked to several different people who come for different backgrounds. Then i found clipart on google.com, but I also incorperated some photos of my family and friends. I talked to friends about my idea and got some more ideas for them as well. For the most part I made this personal so I knew what I wanted the final project to look like
3.I spent alot of time trying to find the right clipart and photos, and me and my friend tried several different arrangments of the collage. It took me awhile to figure out how to save the pictures to my flash drive, plus I had to take several photos to get the pictures I wanted. I dont have a printer at home so I went to Wal-mart to print out good copies. I didnt want the photos on regular paper.
    4. I am proud of my final project because I worked really hard on it, and I want afraid to tell my on short in it. I feel I expressed the message I was tring to get through. I wish I new more about computers so I could have made it look cooler, but I am content with the out come of the project
    5. I hope that my artwork makes people understand how important family vaules really are. Being able to express that in collage, I believe is more affective than words because people can see the emotion that children go through

  3. Family Values Project

    1. I chose to do piece on the backward family values of a possible radical Muslim family, but I used the 1960s television show Leave it to Beaver, that was known for portraying family values of the middle class family of the time. I also put it into a motivational poster format, with the bold white words on a black border reading “Radical Muslim Family Values,“ with the statement below saying, “Now remember Beaver, loaf of bread, liter of milk and pull the cord…May Allah be with you.” The painting shows June Cleavers profile look up at the Beaver while strapping an explosive devise to his waist. On the walls behind Beaver are portraits of Wally and Ward Cleaver armed with machine guns. Below the portraits are black bows as in morning matching the black shawl on June’s head. To the far right there is a chair. I chose the monochromatic color scheme, or value of black and white similar to that of the dated television show.
    2. I used value and color to portray the television show. I used contrast of color for the shawl and portrait frames and bows. There is balance to the painting, Beaver being center and the focal point, a line divides the piece in half showing the far corner of the room giving depth, June, is balanced by the chair on the opposite side and the portraits hang in the background over Beavers head. There is a slight tactile texture to the surface due to the sealer I used to protect the painting.
    3. I chose the shock or humorous spin on the motivational posters I have seen. Using the Leave it to Beaver show that tried to portray good morals and family values, I show how the radical Muslims will use themselves and family members to attack people of another belief than that of their own.
    4. This is a good rendition of the times post the 9-11 attacks on our country. The blend of the moral based television show with the shock that June Cleaver is willing to sacrifice her last family member in the name of religion doing a hundred and eighty degree direction compared to Americas family values.

  4. 1. I was inspired to do my art work over the TV show "Family Guy" because most people know what the show is. I chose to use sarcasm in my title for the project because Family Guy consists of mostly sarcasm during the entire show. Although most people have heard of this show, I wanted people to know that the familes actions do not show my definition of family values. I decided to find a photo and manipulate the photo while adding a title with the "Family Guy" font that the show uses.

    2. I researched online to try to find pictures of the family showing a bad example of family values. I found some pictures that I liked so I had to combine some of the different features the family had. I also had to research and find fonts and logos that the show uses through the TV show. I downloaded different programs that help me manipulate the photos and make the logo.

    3. I had to make different versions of the photo to see which final product I liked better. There are so many diffent ways I could have manipulated the photo. I maniupulated Peter's eyes in my photo and made him look more angry instead of relaxed like the original had shown. I didn't realize how hard manipulating photos can be, it is pratically up to you to decide what you want to show. My mom picked which final arwork she liked the best and I believed it was the best that portrayed a sarcasm version of "family values."

    4. I am happy with my final product and I am glad I chose the idea of Family Guy because most people know what the show is or at least have heard about it. I do wish I would have not spent so much time manipulating the photo on my computer program and I wish I would have just drew the picture out on paper or traced certain images out. This would have saved more time. But overall, I am happy with my results.

    5. I think my photo will maybe help compare your family values with the family I chose. My photo showed a sarcastic version of family values and maybe will help people realize these are NOT the correct family values people should be going by.

  5. 1. Inspiration- I was inspired by my own family. Because to me my family means alot to me in many ways. One of the main things is my son. Because alot of women arent able to have kids and the Lord blessed me and my husband to have him a wonderful son.
    2. Research- I talked to alot of people and got some ideas. Then I used paper, glue, ink, paper towel roll, my son picture.
3.Practice- I had tried several types of things to put this bible together. I used elms glue it didnt work. So then I tried a hot glue gun that was my answer. This was really hard for me to do at first but i finally paste everything together after several attempts.
4.Creation- The materials I use was paper, glue, bible verse, and alot of people ideas. I used these things to make a Holy Bible. This is something I used in my son life. Becuase I feel that the Holy Bible is a great guide and a source for everyday living.
5.Evaluation- I think my project turned out to be fun and very interesting. And every parent should teach their child or children the Holy Bible. Its a great thing in Family Value.

  6. 1. I chose to sort of poke fun at America's Wal-Mart value system. Nowadays, you can just about buy anything at Wal-Mart, even family values. Its a one stop shop that reflects our culture's complacency. People used to grow and manufacture their goods. Now, most just simply run to the local "Val-u-Less" store and get what they need. All the while, people are missing the hard work and sacrifice that goes into each item those shelves are stocked with. As illustrated in my photo, you see this type of attitude in the way we raise our childeren who are supposed to be the furure.

    2. I used my own opinion, as well as what we learned in class as the basis of my idea. i had a hard time getting going(as I always do), but eventually setteled on trying to show how as a society, we're falling victim to watered-down values. As for the technical side, I took several pictures of people I seen and ones from the internet. I tried to get a good shot of Wallie-World where the viewer can still tell what the business is w/o seeing the name. I even incorporated McDonald's in there, too. "I'm Lovin It!"

    3. I wanted my artwork (if you wanna call it that) to be funny, but at the same time have a real message. I think the idea was brilliant, but I don't feel I executed the artwork well enough to portray it. I also did not want to use much text in the final piece. Which did place more difficulty on the images spelling out the meaning.

    4. I stuck w/photoshopping my artwork b/c i lnow i really can't draw. I will continue practicing with the software b/c I think it is a good tool for people like me. I have to work harder in the beginning stages of forming my idea. Much of the picture in my head, ended up being changed due to my limited experience using photoshop. I think i could have also combined my own hand drawn work within this image also. I wish would have used more of the elements of art as well. Like contrast to really make the things I wanted emphasis pop at the viewer, maybe even proportion.

    5. I think my overall image came out average, at best. I think I limited myself b/c I did want this to be really good. I tried so hard till I bogged down. That ain't good. As I stated earlier, I will continue attempting to grow as an artist.

  7. 1) I was inspired by a movie I had watched awhile back called "Idiocracy". This movie hit my hard when I watched it. It made me really think about what the world is going to be like in the future, based on what is happening now. It all starts with a single family, that's why it is important to have family time. When you have some family time you get to sit down and talk to one another. You get to show your true emotions and feelings, you get to share ideas and come up with plans to change something in the world. These things are what helped me come up with my final piece of artwork.

    2) Research: In order to get this design at least half way I wanted it I had to go back and watch the movie and pick out the things I wanted to use. I then used old year books, magazines, and pictures from google to find the perfect images of the people I wanted to express in this artwork. I also had to look back at some art drawings that I did in art class in high school to get the ideas for my buildings and my house.

    3) After failing at printing out pictures, and having to trace the pictures of my computer screen, which wasn't very easy, but finally got it after several times, then having to draw and erase and draw my buildings again, I came up with a pretty good piece of artwork.

    4) The final product was alright. I wish I had better pictures of the people I traced. After looking at it I don't like the people I traced. The shading was really good, thinking that maybe I probably should of went ahead and shaded the whole thing instead of putting color on it but it's too late now. I'm just glad it turned out as good as it did in the end.

  8. 1. I chose to do my project over how eating dinner as a family is becoming a thing of the past. With everything going on it seems that everyone is doing their own thing. The adults may be at work or to busy and the kids generally want to be out with their friends or playing video games. I decided to use a digital picture to represent the differences between past and the present.
    2. Most of my research consisted of looking up how to do various tasks in photoshop and trying to find the photos that would fit my project. I searched through quite a few images for every person in my project and finally settled on ones that I could easily manipulate. Once I had the images I had to research how to put them together, apply the right filters, and how to carefully cut around people in an image. I also looked at many methods to make a photo look older so that there would be an obvious difference in the new and old photos.
    3. I ended up tweaking the original design about 9 times before I finally settled on one, and that's not even counting the adjustments to positioning. I practiced multiple technices and tried out many different filters and methods, which ended up taking over 6 hours. That doesn't count the practices images that I actually tried the new filters out on plus the time it took to read or watch the tutorials. Digital photo editing is a lot more difficult and time consuming than it looks.
    4. I am pretty satisfied with the final image. I just wish I was more proficient in Photoshop so that I could get the effect shown in some of the tutorials. I also wish that I had been able to take the photos myself since a picture of a family sitting at a table is extremely hard to find, or at least one that would fit what I was wanting. I'm pretty happy with how the images I found turned out though.
    5. The goal of my project was to compare a family from the past with a family in the present, showing the differences in how families had time back then but are so busy now. I think my photo does a decent job of implying with the arrows pointing to where the person is now, instead of what they would have been doing in the past.

  9. 1. I was inspired in all the familys that take the time to pay attention to their children. I think that children are the most important part in the family, since they are the future. When I saw some of the art projects in class and that was what gave me an idea.
2.I did some research in the internet, like google, and clipart. I also talked to my family to see what they thaught about parents not being there for their children.
    3. I did a rough draft on my project so i could brainstorm and give my self a clear idea.
    4. When I created my art work, I used my photos that I had researched. I also used foam paper, aluminum, consruction paper and a cereal box.
    5. I did like how my project turned out. I just had trouble thinking on how to put it together.

  10. 1.I was inspired by the mere fact that I believe people should practice what they preach is a strong family value. As a mother, I should be a role model to my children, not just by what I say, but by what I do. Example, is the best form of being a good role model. The media today portrays mothers as sexy, flawless, shallow, manipulative, immoral, gossipy, vicious, and just plain unhappy. In "real" life, mothers are of all shapes, sizes, colors, hardworking, faithful, proud to be moms and wives. I created an artwork that exhibited all these "housewife" qualities. In the beginning, I was inspired by the artworks we saw in class. I liked the layerd look of a couple of the pieces that we saw. After consulting with Mrs. Specht, we came to the agreement that I should make thehousewife images like paper dolls.
    2. My research consisted of a great deal of internet searching. I looked up numerous photos of "Desperate Housewives", hollywood style and real life images. I also looked at images of typical "Wisteria Lane" homes. I looked at severl types of paper dolls to help me decide how the "Housewives" paper dolls would work. After sorting through, what seemed like a million pictures, I was able to decide on the ones that best fit this project. Now that the selection was finished, I had to figure out the best placement for each section of the project.
    3. Once I figured out the placement of my pictures/pieces, I had to cut out the images, accordingly. I also decided to glue the pieces to posterboard for the pieces to be stiff, which would make it easier to dress them. To make the doll clothes, I had to do some tracing, cutting, and gluing. This took quite a bit of practice, I had a few redos, but finally was happy with all of my images.
    4. After all the research, placing, cutting, gluing, and redoing, I finally came up with a final product. It turned pretty good, even though I was worried there for a while. Overall, I was pleased with the final outcome.

  11. 1. I was inspired by my own life. Since i was 16 up until now. The way things happen in life and how strong you show yourself too be. Life is hard in general but to be able to show everyone that i could raise a kid on my own was the greatest ever, especially when they thought that i couldnt.
    2. I didnt have too much research. Except the fact of finding the pictures and figuring out how do put everything together. It was difficult too find the right pictures and be able too know that i could explain everything.
    3. Once i found everything and figured out where i wanted them, then it wasnt so bad. Im happy with the images that I picked out but wish that i was more creative as a person. But overall I think that it turned out pretty good.
    4. Family values are important too me and i was trying too show that even if things happen at a young age doesnt mean anything. Things that happen too you should only make you stronger as a person and i think that over the years i have become a very strong person. not only for myself but for my child.
