Liz Pierce - Critique

Description - Train tracks, bridge, trees, leaves, sidewalks
Analysis - The main character of this photograph is line. The darker horizontal lines of the tracks make them appear very close. The smaller, lighter, horizontal lines of the tracks appear to be much further away. The vertical lines of the track and sidewalk move your eyes to a focal point. That being the brighter scenery at the end of the bridge. Contrast in texture and value also play a part. The darker leaves over the bridge contrast with the lighter trees in the scenery at the end of the bridge. All of the leaves add a softer texture to the picture, in contrast with the smooth hard lines of the tracks.
Interpretation - This picture almost gives me the feeling of the old saying, "The light at the end of a tunnel". It gives me the inclination of someone traveling down a dark or lost road that seems it leads to nowhere. But they are finally crossing a bridge that leads to a new place, possibly a more prosperous place in their life. A brighter future appears to be ahead.
Judgement - I like this picture very much. I like black and white photography. I think it makes you focus on certain aspects of a picture than if it were in color. I look at this picture on a personal level. Going to college is my bridge. My bridge to a whole new world of opportunity for me and my family. A brighter future is lying just ahead!

  1. I enjoyed your blog choice due to my appreciacion for black and white photography. The crispness and contrast of black, white and greys are VALUABLE. The use of LINE is evident with the shap direction of the track and sidewalks focused on the fading direction in this piece. The distracting TEXTURED overhang of foilage states "this is a track less traveled." I notice a rutt dug out in the rungs bracing the track, as if a bad expirience is not forgoten. Thanks for sharing, Jim

  2. I like this picture because it stands out and it also has a meaning behind it. What made it stand out the most was the contrast of colors that were used, black and white. Those are two opposite colors and both complement eachother. I also like the view point of the photo, that to me has meaning behind it like Liz said. Thanks, Shelby!

  3. Excellent use of value. The extreme black and white really makes the tracks stand out. The viewpoint also creates proportion, making the closer tracks look bigger than the ones further ahead. The leading lines draw the attention to the center which contributes to the space element in this picture. awesome picture.

  4. It looks like this photo was taken with a normal view perspective, making it look like you are the train going down the track. The size and direction of the lines help give the image depth, making it look more like you are there. The texture and amount of detail really recreate that realism. Another interpretation I could see is that it's showing how transportation used to be by giving the image an "old timey" look. Nowadays trains are used primarily for shipping goods and not public transportation since everyone is likely to have a vehicle or other faster, more comfortable, means of transport.
